It is a fact of life that once we get older, we become more vulnerable to certain things, such as medical emergencies and home invasions. Senior citizens may be in poor health, at risk of harmful falls, or in danger of a heart attack or other medical problem. Medical alarms greatly reduce the risks associated with such events for older people, while still providing absolute freedom and independce.

When one becomes older, medical problems are a constant danger. They can strike at any moment; out shopping, in the garden, or having a stroll. Medical alarms ensure that help is only a button-press away at all times, no matter where you happen to be. They give the complete peace of mind of knowing that no matter where you are or what happens, emergency medical services are easily and speedily contactable. The simple safety precaution of purchasing a medical alarm can save lives and make life more enjoyable and relaxing for you and your loved ones.

Medical alarms are tiny, battery-powered devices that can operate in a number of ways. Some emit a loud beeping noise when the emergency button is pressed, attracting attention to the potential emergency and ensuring help is administered. These are intended for those who may be unable to physically reach help themselves, or who are unable to defend themselves, making them great for the elderly and the very young. Other medical alarms are wirelessly operated, and when activated automatically contact an emergency response centre. Emergency medical professionals can then assess the situation and dispatch emergency services if required. This means that even if the wearer has fallen unconscious, help will be soon on the way. A medical alarm of this kind can save lives by ensuring help is contacted even if the wearer cannot get to the phone.

Medical alarms such as these are very small, and can be worn as a necklace, bracelet, or keychain attachment. This means that they are very unobtrusive and easy to carry around so that no matter where you are, you will remain safe and protected. Many are even waterproof, so it will not matter if it is worn outside in the rain! Medical alarm systems are quite cheap and easy to install. The main operating box can be placed anywhere in the home, and is quite inconspicuous while remaining easily accessible if needed.

Medical alarms are a great idea for anyone who may be at risk of emergency health problems. They allow complete independence and a high quality of life while ensuring that safety precautions have been taken, and that help is instantly available no matter where you are. Medical alarms give peace of mind to you and your loved ones, and can even save your life in an emergency. The technology used in medical alarms is improving all the time and they are used by millions of people all over the world. You can rest assured that a medical alarm is a valuable investment for you or your loved one.

Did you know that for people over the age of 65, a simple fall can lead to severe injury, hospital admission, and even death? It is a sad fact of live that as we get older we become more vulnerable to falls and subsequent injury. Thousands of older people are admitted to hospital every year due to injuries they received from a nasty fall or other medical emergency.

A wireless medical alarm will improve your safety and peace of mind by ensuring that no matter what happens, you can easily and quickly contact an emergency medical professional. If help is received within an hour of the medical emergency or fall, 90% of older people can continue living freely and independently, just as they always have. However, if there is a significant delay in receiving medical aid, the chances of being unable to continue living alone rise dramatically.

Wireless medical alarms ensure that medical professionals, family, or friends are contacted straight away if anything goes wrong, such as a fall or medical problem. The wireless alarm system consists of a small, lightweight emergency button that can be worn as a necklace, bracelet, or key chain attachment, and a central console that connects to the telephone.

If an emergency should occur, all you do is press the emergency button, and you will immediately be put through to the 24 hour emergency centre. Trained emergency staff will then try to speak to you through the two-way speaker on the main console that most wireless alarm systems come with. This allows staff to assess the situation and dispatch the appropriate help. They will also be shown your medical history and information such as address and age, to further help them decide how best to deal with the emergency; this also saves you from having to relate your medical history and details, and increases the speed at which help can be sent.

If you cannot communicate or are unable to reach the console, staff will contact emergency services and family or friends immediately. This means that even if you have fallen unconscious or are unable to move, help will be on the way immediately. The staff will stay on the line until help arrives in case the situation deteriorates, and also to provide reassurance and comfort at a traumatic time.

Wireless medical alarms are of enormous assistance to people aged 65 and over, that have experienced recent falls or illness, or who have medical conditions that can worsen suddenly. In all these situations, help may be required at any time, and as soon as possible. Medical alarms allow you or your loved ones to live active, independent lives while staying safe in case an emergency should occur.

Medical alarm systems come in a wide variety of types suited to different needs, depending on whether they are for patients or carers, how mobile the user is, or how serious the illness.

One example of a medical alarm device is a small wireless voice pendant that can be worn as a necklace, or kept in the pocket. They are used in a wide range of situations, from elderly people living independently, for monitoring very young children, in retirement homes, or for people with serious medical conditions. This device can automatically place telephone calls with just one button push, answers numbers selected by the user, and allows for two-way communication between pendants. Therefore these devices are great for both the user and their carer.

Another common medical alarm system consists of a central control unit, and a small device containing an emergency button. They are small enough so that they can be worn on bracelets, key rings, or necklaces. By simply pressing the emergency button, help can be summoned at any time of night or day. A signal is sent from the wireless unit to the central control unit, which then contacts an emergency control centre. From there, the appropriate emergency services can be sent to the location, and other emergency contacts such as family and friends can be contacted as well. This type of system often has two-way communication so that the user can speak to the operator at the emergency centre after the emergency signal has been sent. The central unit is designed to automatically accept calls from the emergency centre, so even if the user cannot reach the phone, they will still be able to communicate with the operator.

A very useful device for carers is a dementia patient profiling device. This monitors the activity of the patient so that the carer is alerted to unusual or alarming behaviour that might harm the patient. The profiler is loaded with a typical behaviour profile for the patient. They are highly flexible devices that can be adapted for each patient’s specific requirements.

All of these devices can be extremely beneficial for elderly people or those who have a serious medical condition. They provide the peace of mind of knowing that help is easily reached, and the safety of having constant contact with medical professionals. If an emergency does occur, a simple push of a button will result in emergency medical services being dispatched, an act which could easily save someone’s life.

Older people are at risk of illness, injury, and other medical emergencies, especially if they live alone. If you, a family member, or a friend, are in this situation, you should consider having a personal medical alarm system installed. They give you absolute freedom to live where and how you want to, while providing the peace of mind that comes with knowing that help is only a button push away. A personal alarm can prevent serious injury, and can even save your life.

It is a sad fact of life that danger is everyone in today’s society, and elderly people are especially vulnerable to medical emergencies and other threats. Emergencies can occur at any time, whether you’re at home, at the store, or out walking. Older people are often unable to physically defend themselves against at attacker, or shout loudly enough so as to draw attention to the situation. This is where a personal medical alarm can help.

So what should you think about when purchasing a personal alarm system? Here are few keys things to look out for:

Make sure you look at more than the cost. For something as important as your health and safety, you need to make sure the company is effective, honest, and reliable.

Be suspicious of companies that don’t monitor their own system. An effective company will check its emergency calls daily and assess performance.

Check that staff are properly trained; when dealing with emergency situations, qualified and professional staff are very important.

Make sure the company offers twenty-four hour, seven days a week monitoring. You need to ensure that help will be available whenever you need it, at any day or time.

See how long the company has been operating; a well-established company will have experience, and will have proven that they offer excellent service.

Do they offer free installation and servicing? For many elderly people who are on fixed incomes, this is an important consideration.

A personal medical alarm system will make sure that emergency aid reaches you quickly, even if you are unable to call for it yourself. The trained staff will monitor the situation until it has been resolved, providing support and comfort at a traumatic time. Personal alarms are small and light, so they can be carried with you at all times, ensuring safety and peace of mind wherever you go.

Medic Alert is a non-profit organisation founded in 1956 with the aim of helping people who have potentially life-threatening medical conditions provide critical medical information to emergency services in the event of a medical emergency. The Medic Alert Foundation maintains a database of medical information relating to the user which can be made available to medical staff if there is an emergency. Members of Medic Alert wear a bracelet or necklace tag that is worn at all times, and engraved with a member number, emergency contact, and medical conditions. Members also receive a membership card with more detailed information. These two items will let medical staff know that you have a serious medical condition that may require special treatment.

Medic Alert is based in the United States, but it has been operating in New Zealand since 1962. Since then, it has grown to help thousands of people with a wide range of medical conditions. Medic Alert New Zealand has an advisory board of medical practitioners and specialists from a range of medicinal fields who monitor the database and ensure that all information is recorded correctly.

There are over five hundred medical conditions which might qualify you for Medic Alert membership. Because of the nature of these conditions, emergencies can occur at any time, and complications are likely to occur which may threaten the life of the patient. That is why ambulance and emergency room staff need to know about these conditions straight away, so they can respond to the situation appropriately. Without that information, medical treatment could worsen the situation dramatically, and can even resulting in death in some cases.

Some of the more common medical conditions include:

Adrenal insufficiency

Allergies

Alzheimer’s disease

Asthma

Autism

Diabetes

Epilepsy

Heart disease

Hemophilia

Hypertension

Medications taken that may interact with other medications

Parkinson’s Disease

Devices or Implants such as artificial heart valves or pacemakers

With any one of the over five hundred medical conditions, it is imperative that medical staff are aware of your condition and any special requirements that entails. If you are unable to speak or communicate with staff, your Medic Alert tag will speak for you, informing medical staff of critical information that could save your life. The database is available for medical staff twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Although Medic Alert does cost money, for those who cannot afford to pay, there are a range of options which can be considered. It is a Medic Alert policy that no one should be refused access to this life-saving service through lack of funds.

A medical alarm system is a small, personal, emergency medical device which has revolutionised the field of senior care. These unobtrusiveness alarm systems are monitored by emergency medical professionals twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and provide peace of mind for seniors or hose in poor health and their loved ones. A medical alarm system provides easy, instant access to medical aid as soon as it is required.

Current medical alarm systems are tiny, and wireless, often being worn as necklaces, bracelets, on key chains, or on watches. Many are waterproof, so that the wearer does not accidentally damage the alarm system.

Medical alarm systems allow seniors and those with serious illness to enjoy the fully independent lifestyle they are entitled to without being subject to a reduction in safety and medical aid. Immediate, effortless contact with emergency medical services ensures that help is available at all times; giving seniors, patients, and their loved ones total peace of mind while knowing that a high quality of life is being enjoyed.

A major benefit to investing in a medical alarm system is the ease of installation and use. All that is required for a fully operational alarm system is a phone line that can contact the emergency services in case they are needed. The small size of alarm systems means that they can be easily worn at all times, providing constant, reliable access to emergency aid. And because they are wireless, alarm systems give incredible flexibility as they can access telephone lines and emergency consoles from anywhere at all.

A medical alarm system operates quite simply. When the person wearing the alarm presses the emergency button installed on it, the alarm system is activated wirelessly. The emergency console (installed anywhere in the home) either contacts the twenty-four hour emergency response centre, or dials an emergency contact list that you can choose to store in the system. In the event that no emergency contact can be reached, the alarm system will dial 111 and contact the emergency services.

The majority of alarm systems feature some basic tools such as the ability for two-way communication between the wearer and the emergency response centre. Wireless technology is also increasingly a standard feature of medical alarm systems, providing constant and quick access to emergency services. An automatic dialling system is another feature to look for when considering alarm systems. These allow you to programme a list of emergency contacts that will be contacted if the emergency button is pressed. Bio-monitoring systems are also available on some models, and monitor things like heart rate and blood pressure.

Medical alarm systems are improving all the time, and provide an immense level of support and freedom to the wearer, as well as providing loved ones with the knowledge that their loved one is in constant reach of help if they need it. An alarm system gives independence and safety, and may just save someone’s life.

Personal medical alarm systems were developed in the 1970s by a Wilhelm Hormann, who wanted to create a new way of helping emergency services care for elderly, disabled, or ill people.

A personal medical alarm works by alerting emergency medical staff of a medical crisis or a threat to the well being of the wearer. They are also known as medicalert or medical alert bracelets. Most modern medical alarm systems consist of a wireless device mounted inside a pendant or bracelet. When activated, a signal is sent to the base station connected to the home telephone, which then contacts the emergency centre, the emergency services, or another contact number installed in the system. When the alarm is activated, the emergency contact sends medical staff to the location.

For example, if an elderly person living alone had a nasty fall or sudden onset of a serious illness, they could easily and quickly contact emergency aid by simply pressing the emergency button on the pendant or bracelet. This negates the need to reach a phone, which may be impossible in the situation. Depending on which personal medical alarm system is being used, the alert will go to either the emergency contact centre, or to the emergency contacts listed by the user in the alarm’s system e.g. family, friends, or neighbours.

The base station also includes a two-way speaker system which means that the person contacted by the alert can communicate with the user in order to determine what kind of emergency it is and dispatch the appropriate emergency aid. An emergency contact that has been selected by the user, such as a friend or neighbour, can save on the cost of a professional monitoring service, and may be appropriate in cases where the need for monitoring is low.

As well as including an emergency button, many personal medical alarms also have a back-up system, or “passive alarm.” The base station has a button that the user activates a few times throughout the day. What this does in let the system know that the user is well; if this button is not pressed for a long period, e.g. 12 hours, the emergency contact will ring the user, or dispatch someone to check on the situation. This ensures that help will be on its way in case of unconsciousness or other severe emergency where the user is unable to use the emergency button.

Personal medical alarms are used by millions of people all over the world to ensure their safety and well being at all times. They greatly enhance the peace of mind of the users and their loved ones, while allowing complete independence and freedom of lifestyle without sacrificing safety.

Medical alerts systems are an invaluable resource for those who are require extra medical monitoring or aid, such as the elderly, the very ill, or those with conditions such as diabetes. Medical alerts make sure that you can contact emergency medical aid quickly and easily no matter where you are. However, even though medical alert companies are there to help, you still need to take care when selecting a company to use. Remember, your life may be in their hands, so check the service agreement carefully before signing.

Every provider of medical alert systems will have certain terms and conditions in their service contracts. Some are harmless, but others may seriously jeopardise the standard of care you receive from the system. For example, the service offered may be limited to certain times or circumstances, or the provider may decline responsibility for checking and maintaining the system once it has been installed. It is very important to check the contract carefully before signing it. Here are some more common items included in medical alert contracts that you need to be aware of:

Hidden costs: Some medical alert providers will ask for an initial fee on joining. This may or may not include an installation fee, so make sure you check (some will install for free. Check for cancellation costs, or fines for false alarms. This type of thing can be a nasty surprise if you are not aware of them.

Phone lines: an operation telephone line is needed for medical alert systems to work, but the provider may not be responsible for making sure the phone line is functioning, and will not accept responsibility if you cannot contact them due to a faulty telephone

Extent of services: It is very important that you check and see what kind of services the medical alert provider offers. For example, ask what the average response time is, and whether the emergency contact centre is available twenty-four hours a day. A system that is unavailable after five o’clock or on weekends is not very helpful if an emergency does occur.

• Another very important point is whether or not the provider will regularly inspect the system to make sure it is working properly. You may be expected to check and maintain the system yourself, in which case the provider is not responsible if the system malfunctions during an emergency. It’s a good idea to go for a medical alert provider who offers repair, maintenance, and replacement services as part of the contract.

Before signing up with any medical alert system provider, be sure to have a look around at the other providers available. They may provide a better service, or a system that is more suited to your needs. An important decision such as this should not be made hastily, and it should not be made on the basis of cost. The cheapest providers may not offer the best service, and as they may be responsible for saving your life, you need to ensure that whatever provider to pick is up to the task.

Medical alarm systems can be used in all kinds of ways to enhance the quality of your lifestyle. They are easy to set up and maintain, and provide enormous benefits when it comes to personal safety and well-being.

Medical alarms are especially valuable for homebound seniors, those who are at risk of falls, or those who have fallen in the past. They allow you to continue living independently, but ensure that it is easy to call for emergency aid if you have a medical emergency or a nasty fall. Personal alarms provide peace of mind for you and your family regarding your ongoing safety and level of care, but let you live the life you want to.

Having a personal medical alarm will relieve you of the frustration of being unable to act independently due to the worries of family or friends. An alarm system that is connected to an emergency response centre will ensure that family and friends do not need to worry about your safety, as help is only a button push away. The emergency centre will have a record of your name, address, and medical conditions so that help can be dispatched quickly and efficiently. Family and friends can also be contacted in the event of an emergency. Even for seniors who require constant care, a medical alarm can restore some independence and freedom to their lives.

So what are the benefits of using a personal medical alarm system? Here are just a few:

Easy to install and maintain. All you need is a phone line.

One simple button push is all that is needed to call for emergency medical help

Two-way communication devices mean that you can talk to the emergency staff, and they can talk to you

Alarms are very small and light, and can be worn as necklaces or bracelets.

You can put the central control system anywhere in the house.

Emergency contact centres operate 24/7

The improving technology of medical alarm systems means that there is a large array of options for you to choose from, depending on your personal needs. For example, you may only choose to have a telephone that is pre-programmed with emergency contact phone numbers such as the emergency services, family, neighbours, or friends. Or you could pick an intercom system or household alarm to defend against home invaders. Other options include:

Medication reminders

Voice operated personal alarms

Location monitoring alarms

Alarms that monitor bathroom falling

All of these options will greatly increase your sense of freedom, well-being, and safety as they add the extra security that help is available quickly and easily whenever you may need it. Emergencies can strike at any time, so it is best to prepared, for you and your loved ones’ peace of mind.

There has been a huge growth in the market of personal medical alarms in recent years. Many new companies have appeared that offer a wide array of personal medical alarms both for seniors and the many other people who need them. Because of the amount of choice out there, it pays to take some time to compare the different medical alarms available so that you can pick the one that is right for you. You will discover the alarm that provides you with the most security and peace of mind, and that you feel comfortable using.

An easy way to compare medical alarms is to look on the internet. There are many review websites that look at personal medical alarms, and can give you an idea of what people who use the system think of it. Most companies will also have a website that lists their services and alarm systems on offer, so you can compare features and price.

The most basic personal medical alarm is the bracelet or necklace that is worn at all times in case of an emergency. These allow emergency medical staff to identify any medical conditions you have that could affect treatment, for example diabetes or allergies.

The second common type is commonly used by independent seniors who want the security of easy, instant access to emergency care in case of a fall, accident, illness, or intruder. These come with a central control unit and a wireless transmitter that is worn as a bracelet or necklace. The wireless component has an emergency button which contacts the emergency response centre when pushed. The appropriate emergency services can then be quickly dispatched depending on the situation.

Personal medial alarms help ensure your safety and well-being. They ensure that help is never far away in an emergency, and ensure that you receive the best possible care. Because these medical alarms can save lives, it is important that you pick the right one for you. That is why making a thorough comparison of the alarm systems on offer is a very good idea. Having an efficient, convenient medical alarm that you feel comfortable using will be well worth the effort of comparing systems, especially when it comes to emergencies. You and your loved ones will be able to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that even if the worst should happen, you will be protected and well looked after thanks to your medical alarm.
